Penrith Panthers star Nathan Cleary set on round one NRL return from shoulder injury

As the Penrith Panthers chase back-to-back premierships for the first time in the club's history, there was concern star halfback Nathan Cleary wouldn't be around to help kick off the 2022 season.

The captain had shoulder surgery in the off-season and Penrith's medical staff were anticipating his return to the field in round three or later.

But Cleary is itching to join his teammates from the season opener in pursuit of another title.

"I'm hoping to be out there for round one, a big occasion at home Thursday night against Manly who are a great team, so that's the plan at the moment," Cleary said.

'We want to be feared': The Opals' mission to bring their defensive grit back ahead of the Women's Basketball World Cup in Sydney

The Australian women's basketball team has laser focus on one thing as it builds towards this year's World Cup in Sydney – defence.

The Opals recently returned from Serbia where they had their first proper hit out since a disappointing 8th placed finish at last year's Tokyo Olympics.

While the other nations were fighting it out to qualify for the World Cup, the Opals were able to use it as a learning exercise, having already secured their spot as the host country.

They had two wins and a loss, but it's all part of a bigger plan.

High-tech operation on Sydney Harbour steps up hunt for illegal fishers

NSW marine authorities have upped the ante in its fight against illegal fishing and black market sales on Sydney's waters.

Despite NSW Fisheries seizing about 50,000 illegally caught fish and invertebrates in NSW each year, authorities said it was not enough to curb the rise in unlawful activity.

Operation Ascend, a "high profile compliance exercise" using two high-tech Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV), began in Sydney Harbour in December.

It has already intercepted hundreds of boats since it began, detecting 83 offences, some of them major.

NSW nurses and midwives converge on Sydney's CBD in protest over pay and work conditions during COVID-19 pandemic

Thousands of nurses and midwives have walked off the job in NSW today in protest against staffing levels that they say have pushed an already stretched system to its limit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Staff travelled from across Sydney and beyond to march through the city's CBD to Parliament House with rallies also taking place in regional parts of NSW.

The NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association defied an order issued yesterday by the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) to call off the industrial action.

Plants thrive during La Niña, but not without challenges for coastal gardeners

In July 2020, Judy Hamilton was "devastated" after her garden was destroyed in an extreme weather event on the south coast of New South Wales.

Regrowing the garden was challenging due to drought and bushfires over recent years in the area. Then, La Niña came to the rescue.

La Niña is a weather event where stronger equatorial trade winds result in increased rainfall across much of Australia.

Higher levels of humidity in Mollymook Beach has given Mrs Hamilton's residential garden a new lease of life.
