Elderly and immunocompromised Australians will be forced to isolate in Italy before being allowed to fly home after the Australian government failed to evacuate them when the vessel docked in France.

“We feel like we’ve been kidnapped and are being taken into the heart of the pandemic, totally against our will,” said Elaine Gestavino, a Perth woman onboard.

Australia begins Covid-19 lockdown which 'could last six months'

SYDNEY: Australia started shutting down pubs, clubs, gyms and houses of worship on Monday after a jump in Covid-19 coronavirus cases and after thousands disregarded social distancing advice and crowded beaches, bars and restaurants.

After an initial slow rate of infection, the number of Covid-19 cases in Australia has now surpassed 1,100 with the south-eastern states of Victoria and New South Wales recording the highest number of cases.

“There will be no more going to the pub after work, no more going to the gym in the morning, and no more sitting down for brunch at a cafe,” Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison told parliament on Monday morning.: https://www.nst.com.my/world/world/2020/03/577136/australia-begins-covid-19-lockdown-which-could-last-six-months

US urges Australia to expand Pacific push to South-East Asia to counter China's expansion

The Trump Administration has called on the Morrison Government to extend its "step-up" strategy in the Pacific to South-East Asia, as Washington grapples with China's rising regional influence.

The Pacific Step-up strategy, which aims for closer engagement between Australia and its neighbouring countries, is considered one of the Federal Government's highest foreign policy and defence priorities.

Speaking at The Australian Financial Review Business Summit, US Ambassador Arthur Culvahouse Jr said his government would like to see it go further.

"We'll be pushing Australia to expand its step-up from the Pacific Islands region to South-East Asia and to look north as well," he said.

Ambassador Culvahouse indicated that the next round of Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN) would look to "further enhance" the Pacific Step-up in the Pacific Islands region.

The US Ambassador told the gathering of business leaders on Tuesday night that Australia "sits on the frontline of the great strategic competition of our time".

Coronavirus Australia: Labor calls for mass events to be cancelled and schools closed

Australia should immediately close schools and cancel mass events, the federal opposition has said, arguing the “public health emergency” requires urgent, even “draconion” action.

Shadow cabinet minister Bill Shorten said Australia needed to implement social distancing “not in weeks and months but in days”.

“The only way to make sure this pandemic is not worse than it otherwise could be is to have more drastic social distancing measures,” he told Sky News.

Australia's stock market takes fresh dive as coronavirus cases rise to 122

Concerns about the coronavirus and the capacity of governments, particularly the Trump administration, to deliver timely stimulus have triggered a fresh dive on the Australian stock market amid renewed speculation the economy is heading into recession.
Australia’s confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 122 on Wednesday, with 10 new cases reported by state health officials across the country. With infections growing, and Australia still attempting to contain community transmissions, the Morrison government also extended the travel ban to Italy, effective from 6pm. Travel bans are already in place for travellers from China, Iran and South Korea.
